There's a tree in the house. Why is there a tree in the house?

Some sort of holiday, I assume, but I'm pretty certain that none of the holidays of this world are like the holidays of my own. I've tried my hardest to figure out what this particular one means, based on the decorations alone, but so far my best guess is that we're to give gifts to some kind of... tree spirit. Why else leave gifts beneath a tree, right?

Mm, I doubt that's the case, though.

Could someone explain what's really going on? Please?

Well, it's basically a holiday that celebrates being around other people, sorta breaks up the winter. There's food and lights and presents. I mean, it started off as a religious thing and then it just kinda morphed.

That's a little sad, though, isn't it? For a holiday with its basis in religion to gradually move away from that.

Well...religion isn't as important to people anymore...*sighs* Ah well, I like it better this way. It means more people can enjoy it.

Oh that. I don't really know where that started but it's fun to decorate and that's what you put the presents under.

Fair enough. And the gifts are not to be opened until the day of Christmas, right?

Exactly, although some people open one on Christmas eve.

So it's not a strict rule. What an intriguing little holiday.

Yeah. Where I'm from it's more a lovers holiday, but it's more of a family holiday everywhere else.

I suppose I can see how the concept could swing both ways. Considering I have neither love nor family here, it might as well be a holiday of friends.
