There's a tree in the house. Why is there a tree in the house?

Some sort of holiday, I assume, but I'm pretty certain that none of the holidays of this world are like the holidays of my own. I've tried my hardest to figure out what this particular one means, based on the decorations alone, but so far my best guess is that we're to give gifts to some kind of... tree spirit. Why else leave gifts beneath a tree, right?

Mm, I doubt that's the case, though.

Could someone explain what's really going on? Please?

Hm. It's not as far along technologically as this one, for starters. We have different countries, different species, different holidays, and religions. Elves, dragons, magic, and the like, as well.

They're few and far between, but yes.

That's really neat! We don't have anything like that in our world, though we do have stories with them in it.

So far, so good. The phone took a little figuring, but the box that keeps the food cold is simply ingenious.

The fridge? Yeah that thing's pretty neat. [He hasn't really thought about it before, but hey, he takes things like that for granted]

Fridge? Is that what it's called? Ah, what I wouldn't give for something like that back home.

Yeah. It makes food last a lot longer, that's for sure. What do you guys use instead?

Well, you can dry meat easily enough, or cure it to keep it from going bad quickly. And there's pickling, jarring, and the like. There are some fruits and vegetables we just keep around and hope they don't go bad before we can eat them.

If you're really lucky, you can keep things frozen because you know someone who can Wield ice.

Yeah, sticking something in the fridge for later is a lot easier then having to actually preserve it.
